Gabe and I have been trying to do good deeds for the past month or so, well ever since that stranger at TGIFriday’s gave us $20 for seemingly no reason. It has me thinking about all of the nice things people have done for me over my lifetime. I’ve broken it down into a few major ones that come to mind.
The Nicest Things People Have Done For Me
1. I found out that I was pregnant when I was 19 years old. It was the day after I got a letter from Yellowstone National Park saying that I was hired for the Summer. I’d get to live in the fucking park, also my best friend was hired. It was going to be the best Summer of our lives, and then my pee turned into a plus sign. I called her bawling and she made like five postcards of “our trip” for me. She also supported me emotionally through my entire pregnancy, which was no easy feat. Gabe would call her at random times and she’d be there right away to help me through whatever it was that he couldn’t. I owe her the world for that. She has also always been there for Scarlet since the day she was born. She didn’t get mad at me for ruining our “best summer ever” she just planned my baby shower instead.
2. When I was little my sister Carly and I got American Girl dolls. I got Felicity and she got Addy. Addy had earrings and I was really really jealous. She traded me even though I had already fucked up Felicity’s hair. Nicest sisterly move ever.
3. After Gabe and I broke up and I was living apart from him it was always really hard for me to get Scarlet to sleep on my day’s with her because that was something that Gabe had always done. One day I just broke down and started crying because I just didn’t think I could do it anymore. I was rocking and singing and she just wasn’t having any of it. My friend Chris was there and he took her from me and cradled her and walked her around the house, assured me that things were going to be okay, and that I was a good mom. This seems like a little thing, and I don’t even know if he remembers it, but for me at that time it was a giant thing. I’ll never forget it.
4. I had to plan a wedding in four days because the courthouse was closed for 4th of July weekend. My parents pulled everything together and funded the entire thing, they ran me on a thousand errands that week and helped me with everything. That kind of support inspires me and challenges me as a parent because I want to be there for Scarlet like they have always been there for me.
5. Cody gave me an AE-1, it was the first time anybody had really supported me artistically or motivated me to create. It’s pretty much my most prized possession now and the sentiment behind it will never be lost to me.
6. Amy Jo painted me an amazing teapot with Eleanor Apple on it, the fact that she cared about me enough not only to read my story but to create something inspired from it was overwhelming and amazing. She also just continually supports my writing and motivates me to write more.
So, although there are a lot more nice things that people have done for me and they are definitely not forgotten, I just wanted to take a little time to thank these people for their kindness and let them know it’s not overlooked. love. -kaitlin
